Interested in learning the sitar?
I offer sitar lessons in Melbourne for beginners and developing players who want to learn the instrument, explore Indian classical music, and develop their own musical understanding.
My teaching is grounded in Indian classical music and practical experience as a sitar player and musician. Lessons are tailored to each student's experience, interests and goals, whether you are picking up the sitar for the first time or already have some experience and want to develop your playing further. My approach to teaching is informed by insights borrowed from research in music education. I combine the traditional manner of oral learning with digital learning aids in the form of pdf written materials, and audio-visual materials. Lessons are highly tailored to the needs and interests of individuals.
Melbourne-based students are welcome to get in touch to discuss lessons.

Learning the sitar is a gradual and rewarding process. The instrument has its own techniques, tuning, posture, fingering and approach to melody and rhythm, and developing a strong foundation makes it easier to progress with confidence.
My lessons introduce students to the sitar through a combination of practical playing, listening, musical understanding and regular practice.
Depending on your level and interests, lessons may include:
Sitar technique and playing posture
Tuning and understanding the instrument
Basic exercises and finger technique
Introduction to Indian classical music
Raga and melodic development
Tala and rhythmic understanding
Compositions and repertoire
Improvisation
Meend and other characteristic sitar techniques
Developing musical listening and awareness
Building confidence in playing independently
The emphasis is not simply on learning notes or memorising compositions. I encourage students to understand what they are playing and gradually develop the ability to listen, respond and express themselves through the instrument.
You do not need previous experience to begin learning the sitar.
If you have never played a sitar or studied Indian classical music before, lessons can begin with the fundamentals. We can take time to become familiar with the instrument, learn how to hold and play it comfortably, understand its tuning and develop basic techniques before moving into more advanced musical concepts.
For beginners, the early stages of learning are particularly important. Developing good technique and listening habits from the beginning provides a foundation for future learning.
You also do not need to be an experienced musician to start. An interest in the instrument and a willingness to practise are the most important starting points.
If you already play sitar or have experience with Indian classical music, lessons can be adapted to your existing level.
Depending on your background and goals, we can work on areas such as raga development, technique, repertoire, rhythm, improvisation and musical expression.
Lessons can also be useful for students who have previously learned sitar but have taken a break and want to return to the instrument, or for players looking for further guidance in developing their musical practice.
A Personal Approach to Sitar Teaching
Every student comes to music with a different background.
Some students want to learn Indian classical music seriously. Others may be discovering the sitar because of an interest in Indian music, improvisation, world music or the distinctive sound of the instrument. Some may simply want to learn an instrument for their own enjoyment.
I therefore approach lessons on an individual basis rather than following exactly the same program with every student.
My aim is to provide a structured foundation while allowing room for the student's own musical interests to develop.
As both a musician and an ethnomusicology researcher, I am particularly interested in how musical knowledge is learned and transmitted. This informs the way I teach: practical skills are important, but so are listening, understanding, curiosity and developing a personal relationship with the music.
Your lessons can develop progressively as your playing develops.
Learn the fundamental physical techniques required to play the sitar comfortably and effectively, including posture, fingering and right-hand technique.
Explore the melodic structures of Indian classical music and learn how ragas provide a framework for developing musical ideas.
Develop an understanding of tala and rhythmic cycles, and learn how melody and rhythm interact in Indian classical music.
Learn compositions and musical material appropriate to your level, providing a foundation for developing technique and musical understanding.
Improvisation
Develop the ability to listen closely to pitch, melody, rhythm and musical phrasing—an essential part of learning Indian classical music.

I am a sitar player, music researcher and educator based in Melbourne, Australia.
I have been playing sitar since 2007 and have developed my musical practice through Indian classical music, performance, improvisation and engagement with diverse musical practices.
Alongside my work as a musician and teacher, I am a researcher in ethnomusicology, cultural heritage and cultural policy. My academic work has given me a particular interest in how music is learned, transmitted and experienced by individuals and communities.
My teaching therefore grows from both practical musical experience and a broader interest in musical learning.
